Known as “The Secret of Eldorado” or “terra preta,” ancient Amazonians used a slash-and-char technique to produce a dark and highly fertile soil to support their agriculture.  Today, a similar process is used to create biochar, the key ingredient in Wakefield Biochar’s Compost HERO.  Made with premium Wakefield BioChar, organic compost, and mycorrhizal fungi, this blend boosts micro-organism growth, increases water retention, absorbs nitrogen, reduces the need for chemical fertilizers, and is carbon negative.  This climate friendly soil conditioner is perfect for raised bed gardens, flower beds and patching the lawn; it’s also been known to aid the occasional cannabis plant, too.

“Biochar is a rare triple win opportunity – it improves food security by restoring degraded soils, makes farmers more profitable and stores carbon at scale.  It’s ready to go now!  I’m using it to restore the soil in my garden beds in combination with compost.” – Jeff Thiel, E8 Investor and Green Thumb

How it works:  Biochar is manufactured today through a process known as pyrolysis.  Common waste materials such as peanut shells, rice straw, or wood scraps are slowly baked in the near or total absence of oxygen.  This enables the gas and oil to separate from the carbon rich-solids.  This not only creates biochar, but also fuels that can be used for energy.  Normally biomass decays on the earth’s surface, releasing carbon and methane back into the atmosphere.  Biochar stabilizes the carbon in the soil, enabling it to be sequestered for centuries.
